labourbe hill

Location: Odessa, Ukraine
Type: Landscape architecture

In downtown Odessa, an abandoned park is located near the port. Today, after decades of neglect, it looks more like an overgrown forest than a park. It became a place people are afraid to pass through, let alone have a picnic. That isolated a territory at the foot of the hill and created a divide between lower and upper parts of the city. Healing this divide is an essential step in the revitalization of the whole neighbourhood.

The main goal of this project is to create a local park that complements natural and topographical features of this place without adding anything excessive. Emphasis on quality, not saturation with activities, makes the hill's atmosphere serene. Thanks to the proper drainage management, durable materials and perennial plants maintenance costs for the park are lowered significantly.

An entrance to the catacombs, areas of open bedrock and a multitude of ruined structures can be found on the hill. Those elements had a significant impact on the finished concept of the park. Project's additions contrast with historical and topographical features of the park without trying to imitate them. Which, in turn, highlights them and adds a new distinct "layer" of history.
